Golf

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Yesterday I went and played Wigwam in the afternoon when the course would be empty.  As expected, it was.  I only time I ran into a group ahead of me was my approach shot on 18.

I wanted to use the time to apply the techniques Ronnie gave me.  I still am a little too wristy which leads to my hook, but I’ve gotten it more under control.  I hit a lot of good shots, even with clubs that used to give me nightmares.  The first hole is a par 5, so I hit my drive along the right side, and had about 210 left to the green.  That’s a little bit short for my 5 wood, and I haven’t hit a 3-iron in forever since I always screw it up.  But I decided on giving the 3 iron a shot, and it was a good decision.  I hit a nice shot with just a fraction of a draw, and it landed in front of the green and rolled off the back.  I’ve been using some crappy Top-Flite balls lately while I work out my swing – I don’t want to lose any nice balls.  They do a lot farther and don’t hold worth a damn on the greens.  So maybe if I was playing my normal ball, the shot would have held.  I hit several long irons and had good results with them.  Maybe I don’t need to buy that hybrid after all.

In the end, I finished with a 7-over 77, 38-39.

I’ve finished moving my data over to the new host.  Everything should operate really cleanly now.

I’ve also added a subdomain to host my image gallery.  You can view it at http://gallery.voidpointer.org.

I’ve moved to a new server and updated the blog software.  Unfortunately things are looking a little out of whack.  I hope to resolve the problem shortly.

Testing my foot

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

I played golf for the first time since my foot injury.  I’ve been able to walk on it well for the last few days.  Since I haven’t played in well over a month, I was spraying my shots all over the place.  I gave up after a while and went to practice my short game.  Fortunately there were no problems there;  I still have the touch.  I then returned to hit some long irons, and was hitting them much better.  Practice fixes everything.

Ouch, that stings

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

On Saturday I managed to get seven stitches in my right foot when I stepped on a piece of glass.  I knocked it over, and in surprise I must have backed up slightly.  Needless to say, the glass hit the floor before I did.

On the plus side, it should heal in only 7-10 days!

Golfing with my dad (76!)

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

My parents are in town and my father and I have played four rounds of golf so far. I haven’t played a round in several months. The first day I shot a dismal 87. The next time I shot 40/44 for an 84. The third day I played a par 62 and shot 68. The final day I shot my lifetime low, a +4 76. We were paired with two ringers, one an ex-long driver competitor with a 2 handicap and the other a former golf pro playing to a +2. I know I beat the 2 handicap but it was pretty close between the pro and me. I was happy with the result, and I think seeing my scores drop consistently has shown me that I need to practice more to keep my game fresh.

Soccer Goals

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

My primary goal when playing soccer is to have fun.  Secondary goals include scoring a goal, or making a really nice play.  To my surprise last week, I achieved the ultimate goal – scoring a hat trick.  We played a poor team and therefore I was able to play forward instead of defense.  Of course I must credit my teammates for passing the ball to me, but it was nice to be able to connect.
